With “D of E,” we find The Race making music from that sweet spot between indie groove and dream-pop grace, a place where structure, solidity, and storytelling dance deftly with soundscaping, subtlety, and sublime sonics. Many seek such a musical El Dorado, but most find themselves erring to one side or the other, making music like just another indie band or falling for the charms of those ambient, slightly formless sounds. Both are fine places to find yourself, but “D of E” comes from a much more cherished realm.
But then, this isn’t The Race’s first sonic rodeo, anything but; even this second chapter is now over a decade long, and the experience and ability show.
At over four minutes, they have time to develop their ideas, which they do slowly and seductively, balancing chiming riffs and dynamic vocals with dreamscaping sonics and floating forms, to create a shimmering sea of sound, but one of definition and drive as it is pulled by the ebb and flow of creative tides.
Not for them the obvious displays of velocity and volume; this is about the clever rather than the big, and rather than hit the highs, the music strikes out in more complex directions, the music becoming broader, deeper, more intriguing, more… well, just more.
Clever indie? Solid dream-pop? Noisey ambient? Lush-pop? Call it what you like, just keep dropping that virtual needle back to the start of the digital record…the more you play it, the more you will get out of it. Rarely is music this rewarding.
