Here’s a track that perfectly sums up a point that I seem to be forever making. There is rock, and there is rock ‘n’ roll. Different beasts…very different beasts indeed. The former is often slablike and monolithic music made by overly earnest men in big shorts. The latter is boogiesome, groovy it swings and it swaggers and, well, let’s face it…it’s sexy as hell!
The Savage Hearts definitely play for the second team. But then anyone who cites proto-punk/garage rockers The Sonics, cow punk pioneers The Blasters not to mention genius journalist Mick Farren’s subversive crew, The Deviants, already had me at the word go…or at least the first quick scan of the press release.
And “Radio Silence” lives up to everything those references promise. It is raw, rebellious, and horn-infused; it grooves like a bastard; it is the epitome of energy; it is as fun as it is furious; and it echoes with everything that makes rock ‘n’ roll…make that rock ‘n’ soul…such a force to be reckoned with.
Formed around the songs of ex- Strypes drummer Evan Walsh, The Savage Hearts could prove to be the saviours of rock and roll – guitars roar, horns blast, beats pummel, basses propel, solos seer and sing, and fists punch the air in time to the vocals. What else do you need?
If you are a discerning music fan, looking for the next big thing, or just a damn good time, then this is the only Cavan club you need to concern yourselves with. (Damn, that’s a good pun!)
