I love the sentiment here. The idea that we have lost something, a direct and natural connection with each other thanks to technology and social media, that would have us us believe we are better connected, but which actually sees us ever more isolated. Some artists rage against this phenomenon, and some criticise our failings as a race. Scotty Hollywood via his latest single, “Human to Human”, instead just gently reminds us of better times and that it doesn’t have to be this way.
His is a timeless style, sitting somewhere between the sound of the classic singer-songwriter and the drifting soundscapes of the likes of Chris Issak and “Human to Human” is a gently infectious, addictive and accessible song.
And via the accompanying video, he reminds us that this world of likes and followers, comments, and enforced isolation is not only fabricated; but that it is tearing our society apart. Whilst celebrities fish for likes, homelessness is on the rise. While people argue online about everything from politics to pop, relationships are breaking down, both in the one-on-one sense and in a broader societal, even global, sense. While people compare the number of followers they have, the dark clouds of war are gathering ever more frequently.
We can’t turn back the march of progress, but once we know and accept the downsides, we can learn to use it to better ends and incorporate it into a more balanced, more caring, more empathetic world. And that, quite simply, is all Scotty Hollywood is calling for. That’s not much to ask, is it?
