The Setting Son - I Still Can't Decide What I Want (STWK)

21 April 2025

The Setting Son is a band very much of the here and now, but enticingly, so many of their references are from decades past. And this incredible juxtaposition of sounds and style, genres, and eras makes their music such a fun experience.

With a new album, Cul-De-Sac out on 6th June, “I Still Can’t Decide What I Want” is an outstanding forerunner, a sonic calling card for what’s to come, a way to tease the audience and test the water.

And on the strength of this song and especially how deftly The Setting Son has blended myriad sounds together, those sonic waters look very inviting to me. There is a raw-edged, garage-rock vibe to the song, but plenty of 60’s pop vibes to balance out these urges, and for every wave of hazy psychedelic, there is a jangling cosmic groove. Throw in a short but oh-so-sweet, blistering, and bluesy guitar line, and you have it all. Or at least everything that matters.

This isn’t a deliberate excuse to plagiarise or plunder pop’s past glories; this band is perfectly at home in the modern world and just happened to make music with reference points from a generation or more ago. And why not? Those sounds are too good to be forgotten, so the band recycles, reappropriates, reimagines, and refashions them to their own ends. And do so brilliantly.
