We might live in a post-genre world, one where sonic tags and tribal allegiances have been consigned to the past, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun unravelling a band’s DNA to see what they are made of. The demise of generic demarcations means that bands aren’t forced to play by the rules of one sound or style anymore, meaning they are free to find inspiration wherever it may be found on the musical map and from whatever era. And that can only be a good thing.
I’m not saying that The Trusted has been deliberately digging down into the post-punk, sonic dressing-up box, but there is plenty of such vibes found working its way through their latest single, “Yellowhammer,” echoes of bands such as Suicide and The Velvet Underground, The Banshees and Magazine that probably didn’t get there by accident.
But woven around that formative post-punk sound is a wonderfully forward-looking, dark, and delicious take on contemporary indie music, not to mention no small amount of wide-screen, anthemic pop addiction, especially when the song slips from the more minimal verse into the lush and billowing chorus.
Knowing where you come from is fine, but without a definite direction of travel away from such a ground zero, you are just a nostalgia act. The great thing about The Trusted is that they merely take a few elements of the past to build a springboard to launch themselves into the great potential and unknown possibilities of whatever the future holds.
Leaps of faith are always more interesting than staying within our comfort zones, dontcha think?
