The Twilight Sad - It’s The Long Goodbye (Rock Action Records)

23 March 2026

The arrival of The Twilight Sad’s 2026 offering, ‘IT’S THE LONG GOODBYE,’ marks a significant crystallization of the band’s storied trajectory. In this iteration, the project finds its ultimate expression as a refined duo consisting of vocalist James Graham and guitarist Andy MacFarlane, an arrangement that strips away the peripheral to expose the raw, pulsing nerves of their creative partnership. This is a record of immense architectural weight and emotional transparency, functioning as both a summary of their past sonic devastations and a bold stride into a more expansive, cinematic gloom. Produced by MacFarlane with additional production from Andy Savours, the album possesses a crystalline density, where every shard of feedback and every groan of bass feels intentionally placed within a vast, obsidian landscape.

The rhythmic backbone of the record is fortified by an impressive pedigree of Scottish alternative music. David Jeans of Arab Strap provides a percussion style that is both heavy and remarkably agile, while Alex Mackay of Mogwai anchors the compositions with a bass presence that feels like shifting tectonic plates. However, it is the integration of Robert Smith of The Cure that adds a layer of legendary resonance to the proceedings. Smith’s contributions on guitar and six-string bass act as a bridge between generations of melancholic mastery, particularly on tracks like “WAITING FOR THE PHONE CALL” and “DEAD FLOWERS,” where his signature melodic phrasing weaves seamlessly into the band’s wall of sound.

The album opens with “GET AWAY FROM IT ALL,” a track that immediately re-establishes Graham’s vocal as one of the most potent instruments in contemporary music. His delivery remains a tour de force in controlled desperation, rising through the industrial fog of MacFarlane’s guitars. This leads into “DESIGNED TO LOSE,” a song that explores the cyclical nature of self-sabotage with a rhythmic drive that feels both relentless and inevitable. The transition into “ATTEMPT A CRASH LANDINGTHEME” serves as a momentary, atmospheric suspension, a wordless meditation that prepares the listener for the record’s most haunting stretches.

The midsection of the LP represents a peak in the band’s collaborative reach. “THE CEILING UNDERGROUND” creates a sense of claustrophobic tension that is eventually shattered by the visceral, jagged energy of “INHOSPITABLE/HOSPITAL.” There is a brutal honesty to the lyricism here, matched by a production style that refuses to soften the blows. This reaches a fever pitch on “CHEST WOUND TO THE CHEST,” a track that carries the characteristic Scottish noir of the band into a more aggressive, nearly industrial territory.

One of the record’s most poignant moments arrives with “BACK TO FOURTEEN.” Featuring the unmistakable, shimmering six-string bass work of Smith, the track functions as a backward glance through a cracked mirror, blending nostalgia with a biting sense of loss. It serves as a perfect prelude to the final movement, leading the listener toward the closing social commentary of “TV PEOPLE STILL THROWING TVS AT PEOPLE.” This finale is a grand, chaotic exit, a sonic disintegration that mirrors the title’s promise of a protracted farewell.

‘IT’S THE LONG GOODBYE’ is an articulate, devastating achievement. It is the sound of a band that has stopped looking for the light at the end of the tunnel and has instead learned to map the darkness with terrifying precision. By distilling their sound through the core duo of Graham and MacFarlane while inviting the contributions of peers and mentors alike, The Twilight Sad have crafted a definitive statement on the enduring power of the beautiful, articulate scream.
