The Ultimate Dreamers - Digging (Spleen+)

To say that “Digging,” the latest single from The Ultimate Dreamers, is a song built out of extreme sonic forces is an understatement, to say the least. We get used to opposing sounds clashing in such gothic/industrial/post-punk realms, but even those expectations don’t prepare us for what we find here.

This is more than just abrasive and heightened sounds imploding on a blank music canvas, for here, those sounds seem to be dropped from space and into the fathomless depths to create a musical contrast that goes way beyond the simple loud/quiet interface so loved by the alternative music world.

“Digging” is the blending of cold wave melancholia, Cold War winds, nuclear winter, apocalyptic sonics, atmosphere, and anticipation, all realized as, if not quite, song in the conventional sense, at least sound in a broader context.

As a first taste of their album Paradoxical Sleep, slated for release in early 2025, “Digging” is an intriguing proposition, a song that swerves the theatrics and cliche of the gothic world, tempers the bombast of the industrial realm and which blends ambient, cinematic moves with incendiary and doom-laden grooves.

Throw in the artful and slightly avant-garde video, one that is as cool and abstract as the music it seeks to act out, and you have one of the most impressive and memorable calling cards I have come across in a long time.
