Some art is created to be taken at face value, representing actuality and the real world. But most art, generally the best art employs metaphor rather than taking you by the hand and leading you to the conclusion that the creator would like; instead, it lets you make your own mind as to what is being portrayed. And so it is with “3’s” the second of a brace of recent singles from South Carolina’s The Yets.
Here, high above the crowd below, a high-wire walker wows those looking on. Her struggle for balance and dexterity masks the vulnerability and dangers of her performance, itself a metaphor for life. “Life is a three-ring circus, where ego and pride take center-stage, performing illusions of perfection until the act unravels, revealing the calamity beneath,” so says Robin Wilson, whose vocals, along with Craig Anderson Snook’s beautiful sonics, grace this fine piece of shimmering, dreamscape pop.
The Yets brilliantly blend their lush guitars with sumptuous vocals in a way not unlike Cocteau Twins only with a less obscured, more structured sound. Following on from the previous single, “Define The Man,” an even more spacious and fragile soundscape, these two singles act as the perfect taste of Pinup Girl, their debut album, which is expected early next year.
Dreampop with definition and focus? Pop forged of hallucinogenic reverie? Cinematic soundscaping as an advance on the mainstream music world? Call it what you will just make sure you beg, borrow, steal, or preferably buy, the album as soon as is humanly possible. If not sooner.
