The Yets - The Yets (EP) (Royal Terns Records)

11 January 2023

There are several reasons why a band or record catches your eye. It could be their sartorial style, an interesting headline, or a small snippet of music you heard that makes you want to find out more about them. In the case of The Yets, it was a simple, four-word phrase. “Cocteau Twins inspired single.” Gets me every time.

And indeed, “Letter To A Boy”, the single in question, floats along with the same mix of groove and grace, the same blend of ethereality, the same combination of the chiming and the charming, as the aforementioned musical icons.

But one swallow does not a summer make, and one single doesn’t automatically justify a whole ep or album. Thankfully, this single is accompanied by some excellent and clever travelling companions. “Waterline”, which kicks things off, is a neat blend of shimmering sonics and a more solidly constructed song structure, a song that is simultaneously pop-aware, dripping with indie cool, and full of rock integrity. A signature sound that underpins most of the songs found here.

Even songs such as “Lesser Evil”, which play with brooding drama and foreboding sounds, have an accessibility and intrigue which would appeal to the more discerning chart aficionado. “Happy Now”, which plays us out, has more than a hint of Kate Bush coiled through its DNA, and that makes me happy too.
