Tidal Water - Legal Snare In A Therapist's Chair (Prorigg)

19 November 2024

Music isn’t just about entertainment, although it is obviously very good at being that. At its best, it has the power to inform as well, provoke thought, broadcast ideas, be political and socially observant, and much more besides. Although genres such as soul and folk have always been masters of the art, such an approach has always seemed most prevalent within rock music.

This is a shame because, sadly, rock musicians, by and large, aren’t very good at it. Whilst the genre is good at making a beautiful noise, laying down a groove, making boogie-some music, and the like, when it tries to be lyrically poignant, its messages often come off as being a bit crudely done, lacking in depth and dexterity, clumsy and obvious. Rock music is good at being big, not so good at being clever.

Which is why I love Tidal Water. They always have something to say, and say it eloquently. They find the requisite meaning and messaging within their lyrics and talk about things that truly matter. Yet they never ram their thoughts and theories down the listeners’ throats; rather, they slowly draw them into the conversation with skill and subtlety. Like a TED talk with a kick-ass beat.

“Legal Snare In A Therapist’s Chair” is just such a song. It talks about truth and free speech, transparency, and integrity, particularly at government levels, and how some would twist those words into half-truths, warped semantics, and downright lies. Words matter.

Musically, Tidal Water heads into the realms of slow, progressive rock. Always musically eclectic, this poised and slow-paced delivery turns their own words into a statement, an oration, and a speech as much as they are a song in the traditional sense.

Guitars intertwine, depth-charge basses rumble, piano notes gently cascade, beats carpet-bomb, and the truth is shouted from the rooftops—unmissable and undeniable. See – big AND clever. That’s how it’s done.
