There is a wonderful, seductive thread of sonic subversiveness at work on “Firefly,” the latest one from Tracy, and a message of support and positivity. Musically, it pushes its folky-acoustica into dreamy territory, and if the sound, title, and cover artwork suggest something bucolic and reserved, lyrically, Tracy has a much more poignant message. The most important messages can be delivered by the most subtle music.
Written in the wake of the L.A. wildfires, “Firefly” is a song that came together quickly, her muse descending almost instantaneously as she processed the images of devastation and contemplated how she could help.
The result is a gorgeous folk ballad with just the echoes of a country twang, delicately dressed in the sound of drifting steel pedal guitars and the ebb and flow of a Hammond organ, it is the perfect frame for Tracy’s lyrical message, impressive vocals and heartfelt delivery.
As is always the way with such songs, as deft and delicate, as finely composed as the music is, it is all about the message. The message is one of solidarity and raising awareness for the victims of the tragedy.
It is also a fantastic sample of her music, often compared to the iconic sound of k. d. lang, which is no small tribute, and which comes as a taste of her debut EP, Songbird, which will follow later in the summer.
Music that is not only a beautiful experience but also for a worthy cause, it doesn’t get better than that.
