My favorite music is that which creates its own genre, particularly when that genre only contains that one band or artist. After all, if you are not able to do that, how can you claim that you are doing something original, I mean, truly original? However, it is a fine line; push too far into the experimental realms, and you often find yourself creating all-too-challenging and unpalatable avant-garde musical art. Err too much on the side of creative caution, and you just sound like music that has gone before.
Tralalas, a project led by singer, songwriter, and musician, Morten Alsinger, makes music that hits that balance just right, and “Burns” is the new single.
Sitting in the eye of a sonic storm, the perfect central point in a squalling maelstrom of reverberating and resonant psych-surf-rock and roll guitars and growlled vocals, spaghetti western vibes and post-punk punch, art-attacks and indie cool, “Burns” is a singular sound, but one whose individual elements are just on the right side of familiarity and comfort zones to make things accessible enough for more mainstream tastes too. Well, not that mainstream, but all things are relative.
As with previous single, “Winter on the Vine,” again we find an artist digging deep for understanding, a three-and-a-half-minute meditation on the plasticity of emotions, of loss and gain, friendship and love.”_ It’s a song that grabs you for its unique, and perhaps challenging sound, although fans of the likes of Nick Cave and Tom Waits will understand what’s going on here. When the two songs are considered together, they form the perfect introduction to the debut album, which will be out very soon.
