If names mean anything, then Trashy Annie’s chosen moniker is the perfect forewarning of the gutter-groove, foot-on-the-monitor, abrasive garage rock that bubbles up and then explodes in your face as you drop the needle on the record. “Some Strange” is the glorious sound of rock ‘n’ roll doing what it has always done so well – swinging, grooving, ducking, and diving, delivering the goods with an extra helping of attitude and energy.
When people ask why I always differentiate between rock and rock ‘n’ roll, this song is a case in point. Although they might be siblings, both descendants of that early country rock, rockabilly, and R&B sound, rock music decided it wanted to be big and bombastic, built on bravado-fueled, intense, and monolithic qualities, usual played by bearded men in big shorts, whereas rock ‘n’ roll was happier going for low-slung and seductive, groovesome, edgy, boogie-inducing and, yes, sexy. For me, that wins every time.
And as its guitars grate and grind, riff and roar, basslines and backbeats lay down propulsion and power, Annie, first lady of trash, serenades us with tales of dirty biker bars, seedy motels, casual hookups, and the brutal honesty of life on the road. This kind of life ain’t pretty, but she is never going to be short of a shocking anecdote, a brutal and beguiling tale and obviously lyrical inspiration.
Trashy Annie is the natural custodian of the sonic torch handed down by the likes of Joan Jett and Billy Idol and Transvision Vamp, not just in terms of the music she makes but in terms of the life she lives. She is the real deal, simple as that.
