If “Mile Wide” showed us that Trickshooter Social Club knows how, not just to rock, but roll, groove, boogie, jump, jive and blast, then their latest, “Better Than Love,” shows us their more tender side.
Here, inspired by the music of their heroes, John Prine and Leonard Cohen, they have crafted a song that sits somewhere between the two, not quite as folky as the former, nor as dark as the latter, but taking influence from the sound and style that made those two artists so iconic.
To call “Better Than Love” a ballad would be to sell it short. Sure, it conforms to balladic traditions, but it is so much more, too. In its way, it is gently anthemic if you can have such a thing. It is deftly wrought, delicately delivered and the embodiment of the love and comfort that you can only find with that one special person. It sways and swoons perfectly and just oozes sentiment—genuine sentiment, not just the false adoration or overly saccharine sweet lyrics that most love songs are fashioned from. this is a love song for grown ups!
Add in a wandering violin that sweeps and soars through at the perfect moments and some gorgeous twin vocal arrangements, and you have a beautiful song delivering a beautiful message.
