If a song can conjure a simple single-word response as it kicks into action, then “On a Prayer with a Broken Wing,” the new one from True North, elicits this one from me. Groovy! Looking for a longer, more thorough, and thought-out description? Groovy as hell!
Okay, I’ll play ball. “On a Prayer with a Broken Wing” is one of those songs that you feel as if you have been listening to for half your life, a neat slice of sassy, soul-rock, one full of gospel-infused vocal harmonies, deft guitar licks and the rise and fall of hammond organs and passing pianos, breezy brass and heavenly horns. Man, they fit a lot in, but never for a moment does the song feel cluttered or overly ornate. In fact, quite the opposite.
As guitars fly for the sky and horns break for the border, you realise that this is one of the most fun and funky, sleek and seductive things that you have heard in a long time.
If my first sampling of True North’s sonic waters was the darker, moodier, more melancholic “No Exit Wound,” then this is the flip side of the band’s sonic coin, the fun in the sun opposite of that more heartfelt and, perhaps, intense opening gambit.
In just two songs, True North has shown a masterful ability to span a broad sonic spectrum. Just imagine where such adventurousness might take them next. I, for one, can’t wait to find out.
