The term Americana obviously suggests music that reflects a specific sonic strand of life, music and culture of the country from which it takes its name. But if you can accept that Americana is just another genre of music or a style, sound or attitude, it can surely come from anywhere on the globe. And if so why not Europe?
And it does, in fact, there is a very vibrant scene to be found on that continent, which is why you find artists such as TuskHead, someone based an ocean away yet sounding about as authentic as you can get. And to be fair, if you didn’t know that he was based in Herwijnen in The Netherlands you wouldn’t know any difference.
His latest release, Modern Electric Sessions is a brace of singles that resonate with all the required sonic elements of the genre. “Maybe” is replete with country rock guitar twangs balanced against a lilting and lovely acoustic guitar, gently anthemic vocals and heavenly backing harmonies.
“Goodbye, Music City” is a slightly darker, more melancholy affair, a reflective look at the realities of trying to make it in Music City, the place otherwise known as Nashville but is essentially a metaphor for the effect of the seductive charms of the bright lights on the wide-eyed would-be music star. And again, the tones and textures of those intertwined guitars and the bitter-sweet vocals are more Austin than Amsterdam, more Dallas than Delft.
Americana is a state of mind, and TuskHead might have his feet planted on the lowlands of The Netherlands, but he is gazing at the rolling hills of Tennessee.
