Inspiration can strike at any time and in any form. But I suspect few have felt the muse descend so aggressively as the time that Hayley Harland, artistically known as TYGERMYLK, was knocked unconscious whilst lying in bed by a falling geode. Ouch!
But, more than just an accident, they chose to read this as the universe sending a message, a sign, a bolt from the blue, a rock to the head, telling them to embrace their true nature as they lay in bed next to someone who felt right for them. Ironically, after the blood-soaked incident and months of post-incident recuperation and memory loss, the titular Natali, who was next to them at the time of the incident, drifted out of her life.
Some might choose to wallow in the self-pity of this almost unbelievable, tragic-absurd incident, instead, TYGERMYLK turns it all into a great song. “Natali” is a gorgeous weave of dream-pop grace and serene folktronic structures, an adventurous approach to time signatures and tension and energy that power its drifting grandeur ever higher.
Lyrically, TYGERMYLK proves to be a poetic and playful writer, one able to delicately blend honest observations with pop-culture humour, part personal narrative, part mirthsome asides.
Life’s like that; it gives with one hand, and it uses the other to bash your head with a lump of semi-precious stone. You gotta laugh!
