Under Starling - Bird Watching (self-released)

23 March 2025

No matter what events are taking place in Under Starling’s songs, no matter what hearts are being healed or broken, what unexpected twists or turns run their course, there is always one character that seems to loom large. Nature. And not just nature but the beasts and birds, fauna and flora, and landscape of Ireland’s south-east coast.

Here, two lovers savor what little time they have left together before, like the titular birds, they must depart, leaving just the sound of the wing on the breeze and memories to be cherished.

And it isn’t hard to picture the scene, the music rising slowly from a gorgeous folktronic meets indie-guitar sound into epic, billowing alt-rock evoking the birds flitting through the meadows, the myriad hues of the gorse and plants, perhaps a dark and tumbling sky above and the mighty heave of the sea in the distance.

There is something powerful and primal at work here. The imagery is timeless, the sonics delicate and anthemic as required, and the pace is poised and perfectly pitched. The addition of Molly Robb’s vocals to create the sense of lovers’ intertwined thoughts and voices is the perfect touch, and as the song echoes across the sky, as its crescendo is reached, the sense of loss and longing is palpable.
