Vanderwolf - A Time To Die (Another Record Label)

5 April 2025

This, the second release in the artist’s “Vanderwolf Singles Club” series, takes as its inspiration from the idea of air travel. More specifically, as a once frequent flyer across the European skies, it takes the idea of that moment when you hit turbulence so rough that you stop reveling in the quality, affordability and accessibility of the air travel available to you and focus only on your own mortality, musing on your frivolous choice to take such an unnatural mode of transport and dwell on the fact that you may never see your loved ones again.

Yet faced with such a stark possible outcome, the music is surprisingly soulful and serene. Whereas many would overreact and make this into melodrama or a sonic panic attack, Vanderwolf seems to accept his fate and enter a state of resigned musical bliss.

His life flashes before his eyes, those things left undone are regretted yet accepted, and heavenly brass ensembles and flights of blues playing cherubs, choirs of angels, and psychedelic seraphim play him to his fate.

It’s a surprisingly understated affair, gorgeously harmonious and seductively sweet. I only hope that, faced with my own last moments (potentially), I will be as chilled out as he is on this musical state of grace.

Spoiler alert: Fear not, he made it out alive; after all, he wrote a song about the experience.
