There is always something fun, original, unexpected, or sublime about Vanderwolf’s music, more often than not, all of those things simultaneously. It’s like he is constantly exploring a part of himself or holding a mirror up to the rest of us, and whilst on the surface, the brilliantly named “Fuckwitt McGee” feels like just another silly song, dig a little deeper and there is a lot more going on.
If you do want to take things at face value, what you get is a brilliant ditty forged in the same mold as the likes of Jim Croce at his most whimsical – a soulful groove, a relaxed vibe, amusing lyrics, gorgeous gospel harmony vocals, and, most unexpectedly of all, a kazoo solo! (The world needs more of this sort of thing.)
And as much as the lyrics are fun, they are not as throwaway as they might first appear to be – instead, a satirical anthem and social commentary with McGee representing the everyman, the willfully ignorant man-in-the-street whose classic blend of ignorance and confidence has long been, especially if found collectively gathered with more of his kind, the blueprint for civilization’s most spectacular missteps —whether he is locking his keys in the car one minute, launching nuclear codes the next! He is nothing if not well-named.
And you know what Sid Vicious famously and crudely said about the man in the street, something too rude to be repeated here… Well, he was not wrong.
