As the creative world moves on, people, some people at least, forget that a lot of the heavy lifting has been done in music, and instead of looking to create new genres, splice together new sounds, and sculpt new creative landscapes, perhaps it pays to look back at what has gone before. I’m not in any way advocating for a retrospective, more of the same, tribute to the past. But I am saying plenty of mileage can be gained from returning to some of the earlier and established genres.
You could argue that classic rock and roll found its perfect form a long time ago, and the smart musician only needs to embrace that sound and polish it up for a new era. That is what VANNGO does so well on “Heartbreaker USA.”
Infectious riffs and incendiary, low-slung blues grooves, energetic drums, and VANNGO’s signature soulful growl are deftly and spaciously combined to create the sound of vintage rock and roll, with a slight hint of southern boogie, all brought bang up to date. A timely and timeless sound, a new take on a beloved style.
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t hurt if someone comes along every now and then, adds a nice set of white wall tires, polishes the rims, puts the pedal to the metal, and wheel spins their way out of here, leaving smoke in the air and tread marks down the center of the road. “Heartbreaker USA” is the sound of VANNGO doing just that.
