Vegas On Bass claims that their home country, Italy, is more inclined towards accessible melodies and pop music than anything harder or heavier. Because of this, they see themselves as the perfect antidote to a scene that they see as lacking in bite and bravado, bereft of vim and vigor. Well, I can’t comment on that country’s musical landscape, but I can say that here we have a band that makes a great sound.
They manage to take enough of the ubiquitous melodicism that they measure themselves against and blend it with plenty of abrasive sonics, and nu-metal vibes, industrial grit, and metallic grooves.
Take a song such as “Meltdown.” It balances muscle and melody, light and shade, razor-wire precision and hard rock weight, sonic finesse and musical bombast. To be able to do all of that in one song is the mark of a band that really knows what it is doing.
“No Ties” is raw and raucous, but not at the expense of accessibility. Riffs drive, guitars execute technical moves, and the music is big, anthemic, and epic, but the groove is one straight out of the alternative nightclub. And if songs such as “Away” are swathed in sonic salvos and squalling energy, “Fall For Nothing” is accessible, infectious, powerful, and balanced.
Vegas On Bass may feel the need to push back against what they see as a more popular and mainstream music scene, but I wouldn’t worry about it. Anyone who can write songs that blend power and poise this well doesn’t need to worry about what the competition is doing. There is no competition.
