If dream pop is a term used to describe music that pushes the accessibility of pop music into more drifting and dreamlike places, “Wait” feels as if it sits on firmer ground, perhaps at the point of the same spectrum when that genre coalesces into a more melodic and solid sound. It’s a place where the best of both worlds still play out, the harmony of one washing up on the floating sonic shores of the other, but it has more in common with pop ethics than dream time aesthetics.
But enough of me trying to sound clever and academic; this is music, and music is an emotive thing. The reality is that “Wait” is a great song with a fantastic groove; it drives on a robust beat, some gorgeously underplayed vocals from Scott Weinkle and one of those riffs that seem to be doing nothing and yet add everything at the same time. Wrap this in sensational synthy sonics that give it a smooth edge and sophisticated sheen, and you have it all. It is fair to say that Velvet Sun knows precisely what they are doing.
Never has the sound of South Florida in 2025 sounded more like a cross between the Liverpool in the 80’s and 90’s Oxford.
