I remember describing Verticoli’s previous single, “Home” as big, well, not just big but “…the sound of a band making the right sonic choices to build a muscular and still melodic sound.” With the new one, “See You Around,” they seem to have taken that same approach and attitude to songcrafting, but pushed one element to the fore above all others…space.
The clever thing here is that you can still see the smart blending of sound, the deft sonic weaves, and the band’s ability to balance artistry with anthemics, but there is much more space between everything. “See You Around” almost feels like an exploded diagram of how their music works, providing instructions on how to make music that both fills the air and is open and opaque enough that you can see the light shining through.
When you listen to the song, you hear all the familiar rock band elements at work, but here they’re doing more astute, more precise, more pleasing things, yet still within a rock, or at least indie-rock environment. The beats are relaxed, the bassline melodic and understated, the guitars happier to coil and chime, rather than rock out, and the vocals are lush and suitably softened. All of this is underpinned by the distant swell of keys, which ebbs and flows in and out of those all-important, purposeful spaces.
Some music makes its presence felt by a sucker-punch to the listener’s senses, while some, the more mature and masterful kind, cocoons and cloaks the listener in sonic bliss. “See You Around” is definitely in the latter camp.
