Verticoli - Sleep (self-released)

30 December 2025

We know that Tasmania’s Verticoli can rock out with the best of them; they have proved that to be the case across an array of wonderful singles, not least “Home,” “Milk and Honey,” and “See You Around.” So, it is nice to see a different side of the band on their latest single, “Sleep.”

As the title might suggest, this is something more delicate, more hushed and hazy, more understated, a track that sees them swap their usual big and beautiful sound with something more deft and spacious. It’s dialled down, dreamlike, and damn delicious.

Guitars drift rather than drive, beats are tempered rather than pounding, bass lines are artistic rather than energetic; it’s the sound of the band showing us their, for want of a better phrase, softer sonic underbelly.

But it is just as great, just as rewarding, just as welcome as their bigger, more rock and roll moves, a subtle and seductive offering that might be a world away from most of the tracks found alongside it on Silverlinings, the band’s third album, but it is no less impressive…not to mention imaginative and wonderfully immersive.

It’s the sign of a well-rounded band. They might have made their name via the big riff and the kick-arse delivery, but “Sleep” shows us that even when crafting something dreamlike and gossamer, they are masters of songcraft, no matter what form it takes.
