Vicious Clay don’t make pop or rock or indie, they make music which somehow is all of those at once and yet none of those things, music which seems to skirt the fringes of the familiar whilst falling down the cracks between established sounds. Well, they do on their latest single, “mine all mine,” at least.
Those might sound like opposite genres that don’t really combine, but Vicious Clay proves here that not only can you make such blends work, you can make them work brilliantly. For every raw rock and roll riff, there is understated indie spaciousness; for every bit of pop-aware infectiousness, there is a whole raft of alternative sounds, tangential approaches, and unique creative attitudes.
If I knew what the word meant, I would describe it as a juxtaposition of sounds. Let’s just say that this is the sound of opposites attracting. Opposites such liquid blues guitars and anthemic choruses, college rock outsiderness and garage rock groove, a punk snarl and boogiesome beat.
Taken from their new EP bleeker street revisited, this is an excellent introduction to the band, and if you like what you hear here, then you know where to head next.
It’s a sound that is theirs, all theirs!
