There is something easy, for want of a better word, about this new single from Violet Love, something effortlessly accessible, something gently infectious, an ability to deliver a great tune without ever seeming to try too hard.
‘Airport Road’ is, first and foremost, a great mix of sounds: a shuffling backbeat, an ebbing-and-flowing rumble-funk bassline, deft and warm guitar licks, and vocals delivering almost diary-entry lyrics, as if we are reading over Love’s shoulder as she jots down her innermost thoughts, or eavesdropping on an intimate conversation.
It is also a song with a sense of relief, of finally finding a home, perhaps both a physical one and also the sort of home that is less tangible, more about a sense, a feeling, an emotion. The past is done; it says, let’s look to the future.
Genre-free rather than genre-hopping, this is the sound of an artist picking up all the sonic shiny things that have crossed their path over time, in a magpie-like fashion to create a sound that transcends labels yet is built from well-chosen, easily recognizable building blocks. But you don’t look at the brickwork when you are admiring the architecture, do you? No, it is all about the bigger picture, the finished article, and even the most gloriously original pieces have an element of familiarity.
And that, I guess, is one of the many reasons this song works so well: freshness meets familiarity, past sounds used to build a whole new sonic future… which is just as it should be… and, cleverly, a sonic sentiment echoed in the lyrics, making for a brilliantly concise and cool song.
