Wand is one of the latest Los Angeles bands to try on the psychedelic outfit, and so far, it’s looking really promising. “Broken Candle” is the second single to be released from the band’s upcoming debut LP Ganglion Reef out August 26th via God? Records, wrought with a fast-paced driving drum beat, dreamy vocals, and an overarching backdrop of psychedelia. Like the bands of the 60s who pioneered and mastered this genre of rock and roll, Wand’s “Broken Candle” shifts the emphasis of the psychedelic sound back to a deeper, more melancholy area. When people think of psychedelic music today, the cliche images come to mind: swirls of ty dye colors, hippies tripping acid, etc. While the lysergic vibe is maintained in the atmosphere of Wand’s new single, the lyrics expose a darker side. “I don’t need you now, run for your life,” the singer chants, his words floating above a cacophony of kaleidoscopic drums and keyboards. If “Broken Candle” is any indication of what Ganglion Reef will be like, then I think it’s safe to say we can expect a lot from the group’s upcoming debut. Don’t miss their show at Webster Hall on September 17, the last show Wand will be playing with Ty Segall during their tour.
