Ah, Leeds, the birthplace of the UK’s gothic reverie, where the echoes of legends like The Sisters of Mercy, The March Violets, The Mission, and Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry still linger in the shadows of memory. In this hallowed ground, Stella Wembley emerges as a torchbearer, poised to keep that dark flame flickering.
Yet, the river of music must flow ever forward, evolving and adapting to the currents of every new era and so Stella’s music veers away from the rock-centric tendencies of those pioneering spirits of yore. Instead, it ventures into the realms of electro-goth and darkwave, paying homage to the more experimental second wave of the gothic scene. This is the sound born when disenchanted punks, always the heart and soul of the gothic movement, decided to rewire broken keyboards, bending them to their will, rather than strumming the same old six strings.
Enter “Wasting My Time,” a single that precedes an EP of the same name. It’s a splendid fusion of looped keyboard riffs and cascading digital arpeggios. A sound that embraces the mystique of darkwave while entangling itself in the enchanting melodies of early new romanticism. At the helm, a Siouxie Sioux-like vocal weaves in and out, a mesmerizing dance between direct communication and vocalization as an instrument.
Devotees of the old guard will discover much to cherish, but so will those attuned to the contemporary gothic resonance. As will the disciples of alternative dance, the underground pop connoisseurs, those who yearn to escape from the mainstream but still crave a good hook. It’s a siren call for the creatures of the night, the darkling dandies, noir nomads, and anyone with an ear for a damn good tune. Stella Wembley is here, a true mistress of the night, and she’s got the melody to haunt your dreams.
