You might not think of as New Jersey as the sort of place that inspires music that falls into the broad Americana category, at least not to these eyes, which, admittedly, are viewing things from an ocean away. But, I guess that is just me with an outsider’s view of the Garden State as all casinos and Bruce Springsteen songs, urban sprawls, and reality TV shows, forgetting that if you head to the north of the state, you find yourself in the shadow of the Appalachians and heading into a very different country and different culture and a different sound.
It is between the bright city lights and the older music traditions, between the rock and roll groove and the folkier sounds, between the here-and-now and what has passed that Water Street makes its music—the flavor of Americana that speaks volumes about the region that it calls home.
And if rock music is seen as being boisterous and bold, roots, deft and earth-stained, then it is the pop accessibility and indie finesse that the band throw into the mix that helps set their unique tone, a tone best described as infectious yet deftly done, music that falls between pop and a hard place, that embraces established sounds yet blends them into something fresh and yet familiar, and perfect for the contemporary audience, no matter what their preferred sound or style.
