wht.rbbt.obj play a neat trick on the listener; although you would in no way say that their music comes from an earlier time, it’s DNA certainly sounds familiar, perhaps not quite nostalgic, but built of sounds and styles and moves and grooves that trigger a vague recollection, a sense of deja vu, something you can’t quite place, odd and earlier and other.
And so it is when you listen to their latest, “I Get Stuck” all manner of cool sonic images tumble from your sonic memory – Roxy Music licks and do-wop girl group harmonies, squalling swampy voodoo-blues guitars and strutting alt-rock power, a blend of the then and now, the what was turned on its head to form the what might be. My ham-fisted attempt to put things into words only proves what an unorthodox and unique band we have on our hands.
But enough of the analysis, let’s cut to the chase… It’s a good song. It’s a great song…a damn great song. It struts, it pops, it zings, managing not so much to hop genres as wander in and out of them. It doesn’t hark back or look forward, but instead creates its own sonic reality, where time is no longer linear and all genres meet at a collision point on the Venn diagram of musical possibility. It does everything that musicians in the modern age should strive to do: create new music from the best bits of the past.
wht.rbbt.obj are quickly becoming my favorite music makers of recent times and soon the world will be divided into only two camps, those who love the band and those who are yet to hear them.
