Those old enough to remember punk will remember that as well as ushering in the obvious, it was a doorway for other, more interesting acts to slip into the public consciousness. For every few dozen flash-in-the-pan three-chord thrashers, you would find something more arty, interesting, exciting, and exploratory coming through. In the US bands such as Television, in the UK, The Pop Group. X-Ray Love’s latest single, “Another Time,” has the same feel as one of those scene outliers.
Although London-based, it is easy to see why the band has been doing it for themselves in New York City; they have that heady blend of art-rock and psychedelia, hallucinogenic vibes, and lysergic energy/entropy about them that comes together in a way that is very reminiscent of that city’s past.
But they do freshen this sound up, too, with cascades of indie guitar in the quieter interludes and brash rock and roll riffs when they are forcing the point home. And the point? Well, “Another Time” is about finding the beauty in the broken, accepting change, and seeing hope and optimism in its state of flux and rebirth. It is about looking to bright new futures rather than dwelling on the past.
In short, why be The Exploited when you can be Patti Smith?
