Depending on your age, your reference points for “Red Eye” are going to be either grunge icons such as Nirvana, glam meets proto-punk pioneers New York Dolls or, for those with longer memories, perhaps even 60’s garage-rock instigators The Sonics, certainly in attitude and energy even if not directly their sound.
Such a musical thread reminds us that just as there have always been purveyors of popular music playing to the commercial gallery, there have also always been outsiders and agitators looking to undermine the mainstream. Yacovelli indeed sits in the latter category, but ironically, despite the rough edges and abrasive attitudes, the scuzzy sounds and the raw deliveries, the searing sonic highs, and the sneering vocals, there is also something immediate and infectious about the song.
And that is the incredible irony at the heart of such outsider music. Despite its anti-establishment demeanor, you cannot help but love its roguish charm, wrong-side-of-the-tracks appeal, and bad-boy image. Even bad boys want to be loved!
As debut singles go, you couldn’t ask for much more of a statement, a clear signal of where Yacovelli is going and what he wants to do musically. The only question is, do you have the guts to follow him? Of course, you do. Don’t worry, you are in safe hands, and it will be a lot of fun…trust me, I’ve been here before and still have most of my fingers!
