The more I listen to YEV’s music, the more I hear his Ukrainian sonic heritage coming through. And “Hunger,” his latest single, is a perfect example of that cultural fingerprint found in his songs.
“Hunger,” his latest release, is built on gorgeous eastern, almost arabesque musical motifs, and once the song gets going, the beat set up by the staccato guitar chops is definitely the product of that region where Europe, Asia, and the Middle East all come together, where their sounds and thoughts, creativity and mode of expression all merge.
But it isn’t just the music that reflects the people he calls his ancestors and the place that they called home, but the subject matter, too. That region has long been a place of turmoil and war as cultures and faiths, empires and ideals, countries and political will all vie for dominance. And so much of the music made in such collision zones is laced with the struggles and heartache of people caught in the crossfire.
And so it is with “Hunger,” a song whose keening vocals and drifting sonics are filled with the melancholy of those who have been displaced and forgotten, targetted and tormented, those whose hunger is not just physical, but a hunger for peace and safety, tolerance and empathy, love, and humanity!
“Hunger” is more than just a song; it is a plea and prayer for peace!
