Although he has made music that touches on all manner of themes and thoughts, his previous releases make it clear that Zachary Mason is fascinated by what lies beyond this earth, especially humanity’s exploration of space. But as this latest single suggests, he isn’t just interested in space travel; as the artwork often makes clear, he finds joy in those themes as seen through a 50s sci-fi movie lens.
So, to this end, he straps this latest song, ‘Man of the Universe,’ to a classic rock guitar riff, activates the drum drive unit and bass groove fuel injectors, points the song into deep space, and heads into the unknown.
The ‘Man of the Universe’ depicted here is very much in the Boy’s Own Adventure hero mould – Dan Dare, Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon – off for a spot of daring-do, saving the galaxy, beating the bad guys and getting the girl and still home in time for tea and medals. So it makes sense that within the classic rock sonics there is a slight hint of 60s pop and psychedelic sonics echoing through.
It’s a fun song, a soundtrack to the innocent golden age of the first sci-fi, big and small screen, when optimism and hope were paramount before the dark dystopian vibe took over, stories where technology was celebrated as the way forward rather than the troubling conundrum it has since become.
A great song, one with both feet planted in the joy of escapism, and boy, could we do with a bit more of that in the world today.
