With Welcome To My Heart, we find Zachary Mason at his most vulnerable, three intimate songs that are unambiguous, not to mention brave in their openness and honesty, everything that the title suggests.
“Can’t Feel My Autumn…” opens the EP in understatement, essentially an acoustic singer-songwriter piece: one voice, one guitar, and only the slightest sonic textures adding nuance and the most delicate musical hues to the song’s backdrop.
And although “I Need Freedom” is centered on the same acoustic vibe, it is quickly filled out by a more band-oriented sound. Drums and bass come in big, but never bombastic, and in contrast to this denser backdrop, delicate lead lines are allowed to chime and dance over the top with a classical sophistication and folk finesse.
The third and final offering here, “Me and I,” sits somewhere between the two: the earlier space and delicacy and the previous song’s bigger soundscape blended into a perfect and defining summation of what this sonic triptych is all about.
As might be expected from the title, affairs of the heart are the themes here, more particularly those of melancholy and redemption, of sadness, personal inner struggles and ultimately resilience, with the music rising and falling as required to deliver these intimate yet relatable themes.
Zachary Mason always delivers music made by a safe pair of hands, but never has he worn his heart quite so openly on his sleeve as he does here. Fabulous stuff.
