“Honestly, the lyrics don’t make much sense.” So say Zegovia about their new single, “Prefab.” And I love that. I love that in a world where everyone is trying so hard to be deep and meaningful, using phrases like “lyrical integrity” and “a deep commitment to musical authenticity,” here we find a band that doesn’t really know what their song is about. Okay, they know what it is about, but they aren’t sure what they are saying… which is even better.
That shows a band that is even more authentic, oozing even more integrity. It’s rock and roll, man; it isn’t meant to make sense. It’s meant to make you feel, not think. I mean, it can do that too, but only as an afterthought..
“Prefab” is built on more essential ideals. Ideals such as relentlessly throbbing basslines, intense and incendiary guitars, pounding drums, a punk spirit, and a rock and roll attitude. By the time you are shouting “Hey, Hey” punching the air and head-banging like there’s no tomorrow, words don’t matter anymore, and maybe they never did, not if this is the alternative.
And given that the song is (vaguely) about surrendering to the chaos, going with the flow, accepting that boundaries and demarcations are only there so that you can crash through them headfirst, that life is at its most fun when it leaves you a bit bewildered, battered, and bruised, everything about the song is perfect.
This is music that doesn’t have a roadmap but relies on a vague instinct as to where it is going. But where it is going sounds like a great place to me. It’s the soundtrack to a road trip to oblivion, and we haven’t even told our parents what time we will be home!
