Top 10 Of 1985
In taking a little trip down memory lane, I revisited what are now my top 10 albums from ’85.
The Jesus And Mary Chain – Psychocandy (Blanco y Negro)
The shoegazer bible. Drenched in feedback and irresistibly poppy.
Hüsker Dü – New Day Rising (SST)
Coming off the unheard of punk double album, Zen Arcade, the power trio released their greatest.
INXS – Listen Like Thieves (Atlantic)
Sometimes overlooked in the INXS canon due to the immense popularity if Kick, Listen is a dynamic rock album in its own right.
Naked Raygun – All Rise (Quarterstick)
The mighty voice of Jeff Pezzati is in full throat here and John Haggerty’s guitar work is buzzsaw goodness.
Meat Puppets – Up On The Sun (SST)
Curt Kirkwood does his best D. Boon impression. This is the Puppets’ finest hour.
Prince And The Revolution – Around The World In A Day (Warner Bros.)
With all of his amazing tracks, I’m not sure that any are less appreciated than “Paisley Park.”
Megadeth – Killing Is My Business…And Business Is Good (Combat)
Dave Mustaine’s army’s debut. Just what you want in a thrash album, complete with snarl.
Run-DMC – King Of Rock (Def Jam)
For better or worse, rap-rock was born here.
New Order – Low-Life 7” (Factory)
The most consistent effort from Joy Division-sans-Ian Curtis and also contains my favorite song of theirs, “Love Vigilantes.”
Anthrax – Spreading The Disease (Island)
The first album with singer Joey Belladonna ushered in the “classic” era of the band. The first half of the album is as great as anything they would ever produce.
