David Musto: August 22, 2010

  1. The CrucifucksThe L.D. Eye (Alternative Tentacles)

No offense to their first two releases, but this album has better guitar playing and far less annoying Doc Dart.

  2. HṚṢṬAStem Stem In Electro (Constellation)

Other than Silver Mt. Zion, this is my favorite Godspeed You! Black Emperor offshoot band. Like many, I have been salivating over the return of Godspeed. I chose to listen to something I never heard on those records: the voice of Mike Moya.

  3. El-Pweareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx1-3 (Definite Jux/Gold Dust)

Normally, I don’t like mix albums but these are great. They really show the talent of El-P that I thought was diminished by his live performance.

  4. Science And HorrorGrave Concern 2000 (Self-released)

Searching through an old flash drive, I came across this horror-industrial EP. It’s kind of a heavier version of Goblin with vocals.

  5. Misery Obscura: The Photography Of Eerie Von (Dark Horse Books)

Who knew that someone was chronicling the career of Glenn Danzig from the Misfits to Samhain to his current eponymous band? The narrative is occasionally corny but the photos are worth perusing.

  6. The VaselinesDying For It (53rd & 3rd)

These four tracks so happen to be my favorites of theirs. Trying to find just this EP as I can do without most of the rest of their catalog.

  7. V/ACasual Victim Pile: Austin 2010 (Matador)

A lot of really good songs on here but I have a hard time moving on from the first: “The Ghosts That Wake You,” by Follow That Bird.

  8. No AgeGlitter b/w Inflorescence (Sub Pop)

Just a tease of their new album but I’ll take a stellar b-side.

  9. Modest MouseThe Moon & Antarctica (Epic)

Just celebrating its 10 year anniversary, I somehow forget how good this album is after it has left my rotation. Then, I wonder how I don’t have it in higher regard. Strange.

  10. Batman: Under The Red Hood (DC Entertainment)

As I am a huge fan of Batman: The Animated Series (read: nerd), I am always greatly anticipating the next animation project from creator Bruce Timm. The voice cast is decent (though I think I speak for everyone when I say, “Where is Kevin Conroy?”). The special features are top-notch, though, as there is a feature solely devoted to how the fans killed Robin (Jason Todd).
