David Musto: September 19, 2010

As a result of acquiring tickets to the second and third-to-last shows of a certain Canadian post-rock group’s “reunion” tour, my ears are a bit preoccupied.

  1. Godspeed You! Black EmperorLift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (Constellation)

This is my favorite album by the band and I’m not really even sure why. Maybe because of “Monheim,” and “World Police And Friendly Fire,”.

  2. Godspeed You! Black EmperorYanqui U.X.O. (Constellation)

One song per side means no having to skip and the vinyl also contains a bonus from a particular American idiot.

  3. Godspeed You! Black Emperorf#a#∞ (Constellation)

There are moments on every Godspeed album that give me the chills. “The Cowboy…,” and “The Sad Mafioso,” get it done here.

  4. Godspeed You! Black EmperorSlow Riot For New Zerø Kanada (Constellation)

As great as this is, the first thing I think of is the fact that the poem from “Blaise Bailey Finnegan III,” contains a chunk of lyrics from an Iron Maiden song with Bruce Dickinson’s replacement, Blaze Bayley (referred in my review of Maiden’s album, The Final Frontier, as “Bloze Badley).

  5. Outrageous CherryOut There In The Dark (Poptones)

I ordered this from China and it is worth it. Poppy reverbness done right and before everyone started doing it…again.

  6. Bad Religion – “The Devil In Stitches,” (Epitaph)

The first single from their The Dissent Of Man album is already one of the best songs I’ve heard this year. I know the album will sound the same as the last ten but they’re usually great.

  7. PavementWowee Zowee (Matador)

I, like seemingly everyone else here at the site, saw and reviewed a Pavement show this past week. This is the first Pavement album I’d ever purchased because it ws just weird enough.

  8. Iggy PopBrick By Brick (Virgin)

Don’t you wish you had Slash and Duff McKagan backing you up? My 2nd favorite Iggy solo album containing the so unlike, and so kind of sweet, “Candy,” with B-52 Kate Pierson (the go-to gal to make songs brighter in the nineties).

  9. DanzigDeth Red Saboath (The End)

The chorus of “Hammer Of The Gods,” reminds us that GD still has the capacity to be amazing. He just needs to get out of his own way. Why would you put effects on that voice?

  10. TamarynThe Waves (Mexican Summer)

This could be the year you look back and see the real turning point for Mexican Summer. Already with a fantastic album Best Coast and more to come, this label bears keeping an eye out and ear open.
