David Musto: April 10, 2011

  1. Angel OlsenStrange Cacti (Bathetic)

This is simply the best folk effort I have heard in a long while. Read full review here for my full interpretation.

  2. The MeatmenWar Of The Superbikes (Positive)

This is my fave effort from the controversial band. I’m sure it is no coincidence that it s the only album to feature the dynamic punk axe duo of Lyle Preslar and Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Samhain).

  3. Big BlackSound Of Impact (Blast First)

Albini and co.‘s first live album was a limited vinyl pressing of 1500 copies. Rawer sounding than the wider release Pig Pile and for that reason, it is preferred. Good luck finding it. I haven’t yet.

  4. Hunx And His PunxToo Young To Be In Love (Hardly Art)

This is just great fifties-style pop rock. Check full review here

  5. HellsongsHymns In The Key Of 666 (Despotz)

This is an extremely impressive collection of stripped down Heavy Metal covers. The piano and acoustic guitar-driven version of Slayer’s “Seasons In The Abyss,” is way better than Tori Amos’s rendition of “Raining Blood,”.

  6. Field MouseYou Are Here (Self-Released)

Rachel Browne has created a very bright and pretty indie pop album. Her voice reminds me a bit of Tanya Donelly. Too good a band to still be unsigned. Check out the album at the band’s Bandcamp site.

  7. Marky Ramone’s Blitzkrieg – “When We Were Angels” and “If And When,” Singles (iTunes Exclusive)

The last Ramone standing, having left Jerry Only and the Misfits, joins in the new tradition of leaving Only and joining up with his erstwhile bandmates. First, Doyle (Jerry’s brother, for Pete’s sake) joined back up with Glenn Danzig and now Ramone has chosen ex-”Misfits” singer Michale Graves to be the frontman for this project. The songs are more poppy and have no traces of b-movie or horror references. Wait, though, these songs are actually pretty good. Graves’s voice is vastly underrated.

  8. ObitsMoody, Standard And Poor (Sub Pop)

Rick Froberg’s (one many) band(s) is the second coming of Radio Birdman.

  9. Foo FightersWasting Light (RCA)

After absolutely loving In Your Honor, I was fairly disappointed with their last album. While this is not one of their best, there are still a handful of really great tracks. Full album stream is available.

  10. Beady EyeDifferent Gear, Still Speeding (Beady Eye)

Liam Gallagher and the rest of the Noel-less Oasis pick up the torch for recreating the Beatles. This album is stronger than any Oasis album since Heathen Chemistry. Check out Michael Toland’s review for more.
