David Musto: July 17, 2011

My first Top 10 list under medical house arrest.

  1. Ringo DeathstarrColour Trip (Club AC30)

Yes, another shoegaze band. However, these guys ape only the best. Their self-titled debut perfectly mimicked The Jesus And Mary Chain while Colour Trip recalls the finest My Bloody Valentine.

  2. Cymbals Eat Guitars – “Rifle Eyesight (Proper Name),” (Barsuk)

First track released off their sophomore effort, Lenses Alien is an adventure. If the rest of the album is on par with this track, the band will have outdone their super debut. You can get the track by signing up for their mailing list

  3. CeremonyNot Tonight (Custom Made)

I’m sure that Ceremony takes their name and guitar sound from the Joy Division/*New Order* song. They’ve heaped on some feedback and make a fun EP.

  4. I Need That Record! The Death (Or Possible Survival) Of The Independent Record Store (MVD)

I don’t know how I initially missed this documentary. One benefit of being stuck in the house is having Netflix streaming. An hour of just music snobs slagging off classic rock would have been entertaining enough for me but the film also really hits home with the sense of community being lost in America with failing, not just record stores but, indie businesses.

  5. Wugazi13 Chambers (Doomtree)

Some would call mashing Fugazi and the Wu-Tang Clan sacrilege but as I love early Wu-Tang and Fugazi doesn’t mean nearly as much to me as Minor Threat, this is kind of a refreshing take. Maybe I’m alone there.

  6. OFF!Compared To What b/w Rotten Apple (Vice)

Keith Morris and co. strike again. I’m sorry this took me so long to get because it is really great and right on par with their tremendous First Four EPs.

  7. Boogie Monster Live On Thunderbird Radio Hell

BM is a noise rock band that I have been championing. Their debut, Zechimechi is one of my faves this year and this appearance on a Canadian college radio station rips. Some originals, some covers, all enjoyable.

Boogie Monster Live on 24 Hours of Thunderbird Radio Hell and interview by ben-fussel

  8. TV GhostMass Dream (In The Red)

This is just a downright weird record. If The Munsters had a variety show, TV Ghost would be the house band. This is a bit off-putting at first but it really grew on me.

  9. United NationsS/T (Eyeball)

I have been nodding off a lot since I’ve been home so I put this on to keep me up.

  10. Def LeppardMirror Ball (Mercury)

This was brought to me to lighten my spirits post-surgery. In the interest of full disclosure, the Leps were my favorite band when I was an idiot preteen. I can laugh about it now. And this is only available at Wal-Mart. Hilarious.
