David Musto: August 21, 2011

There’s no substitute for the gruff and gravelly voice of Lemmy Kilmister. He is a baaaaad man. He of the warts and mutton chops is 65 years old and he has left his contemporaries and most that have come after in the figurative (and sometimes literal) dust. In addition to playing as loud and fast as ever, Lemmy is an underrated songwriter that is still capable of crafting the catchy tune. The music, as well as his digestive tract, still has plenty of octane. With all of that in mind, here are my top 10 Motörhead albums.

  1. MotörheadAce Of Spades (Mercury) 1980

The obvious choice, for sure. The jaw-clenching classic title track followed by “Love Me Like A Reptile,” make a 1-2 punch at the beginning that rivals Raw Power. Don’t buy it? Check it out below.

The rest of the record is stellar as well.

  2. MotörheadMarch Ör Die (Epic) 1992

Album #10 is big with anthems and a couple of assists from Ozzy. Despite regular radio airplay of “I Ain’t No Nice Guy” (with an acoustic guitar, no less), MÖD didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Still, it’s one of my faves.

  3. MotörheadOverkill (Mercury) 1979

Their second album and first with all songs written by Lemmy, “Philthy Animal” Taylor, and “Fast” Eddie Clarke. It shows. They cemented their sound and Lemmy hasn’t looked back since.

  4. MotörheadBomber (Mercury) 1979

Released just a scant 7 months after Overkill, Bomber is the meat in the unholy sandwich along with the bread of Overkill and Ace Of Spades. It’s hard to beat the output the band delivered in less than two years.

  5. MotörheadBastards (ZYX) 1993

A concerted effort to not be so radio friendly, they still managed a couple of amazing tracks in “I Am the Sword,” and “Devils,” along with a slew of solid ones.

  6. MotörheadAnother Perfect Day (Mercury) 1983

Not quite “perfect” but still excellent. My fave tracks are the most incredulous.

  7. MotörheadIron Fist (Mercury) 1982

The last album with the classic lineup did not disappoint.

  8. MotörheadOrgasmatron (GWR) 1986

Crude title but what does one expect? This one’s a little up and down but still boasts a couple of awe-inspiring songs.

  9. MotörheadKiss Of Death (SPV) 2006

At the time, their best album in 13 years.

  10. MotörheadThe Wörld Is Yours (Self-Released) 2011

The latest and twentieth studio album. That is unheard of. Mr. Kilmister still manages to come up with some fine ideas.
