Follow The Big Takeover
Top ten albums of 2012, a healthy mix of newer acts and returns of old favorites.
The Men – Open Your Heart (Sacred Bones)
Big noise, big hooks, huge expectations. These guys grow leaps and bounds with every release which they crank out freaky fast.
Bob Mould – Silver Age (Merge)
Easily, my favorite Mould solo record. It has the tunes and the teeth.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor – ‘Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! (Constellation)
The long awaited return for these folks was, if not worth the wait, damned close.
Crocodiles – Endless Flowers (Frenchkiss)
Another band who’s albums keep getting better.
Lotus Plaza – Spooky Action At A Distance (Kranky)
This may be my favorite album from any member of Deerhunter.
Ringo Deathstarr – Mauve (Club AC30)
Not quite as good as Colour Trip but this is still fracking awesome. Awesome pop that is endlessly listenable. Can’t get sick of this one at all.
DIIV – Oshin (Captured Tracks)
My absolute favorite debut album this year.
Lee Ranaldo – Between The Times And The Tides (Matador)
The best albums from former Sonic Youth members have not come from Thurston Moore or Kim Gordon. Along with Steve Shelley’s work with Disappears, Lee Ranaldo has really raised his game.
River City Tanlines – Coast To Coast (Big Legal Mess)
The finest hour of Alicja Trout. A great album from her greatest band.
Angel Olsen – Half Way Home (Bathetic)
The first full-length from this infinitely talented songstress. She has an astonishing, emotionally charged voice.
