Joel Marquard is stepping out of the shadows once again. Come Friday, the ostentatious yet mysterious musician will release the vinyl edition of Ad Hoc, the latest album by his curiously titled band Spiritual Warfare and the Greasy Shadows.
The experimental pop group originally self-released Ad Hoc in May 2018. The new vinyl version, issued by Earth Libraries, will come with a free digital bonus track, “Thick of It,” for those who throw down for the vinyl.
Spiritual Warfare and the Greasy Shadows infused their new record with too many musical flavors to count. Listeners will detect notes of Golden Era Bollywood, exotica, oldies, punk, Indian drum patterns, African and Latin hand percussion instrumentation and beyond.
Marquard recently spoke with the Big Takeover about his fascination with combining genres.
“I stumbled upon the box for the Pro Tools software I had installed a couple years before and when I opened it found a disc at the bottom called ‘Loops,’ “ he said. “I put it in my computer, and it contained hundreds of different recorded instruments which were cut in a way that they could easily be looped: loops like ‘Neo-Soul Bass’ or ‘R & B Drums O2.’ But, along with those were a bunch of drums from India as well as African and Latin hand drums. From those loops and beats I made, the project was born. I set up a rule. No drum kits. Only hand drums.”
Today, the Big Takeover is honored to present Ad Hoc and its bonus track, in its entirety. Check it out here:
