Fear of the apocalypse used to be relegated to a small minority of conspiracy theorists, religious cult members and doom-and-gloom types. Now, due to climate change and the rise of the machines, that dark vision of the world is no longer considered laughable.
That’s a bummer for Collyn McCoy, a defiantly anarchistic, anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist multi-instrumentalist. He now bears witness to the mainstream accepting ideas that many of those same people deemed blasphemous, psychotic and/or unacceptable not long ago.
Nonetheless, with Night City, McCoy isn’t backing down from his obsession with dystopian cyberpunk and a bleak outlook for the future. McCoy continues to dwell on those dire subjects with a new project firmly rooted in sludge metal and industrial music (or noise, depending on your musical taste).
Not to be confused with Scorpions’ song “Big City Nights” — or Ohio’s now-defunct pop-rock group called City Lights — McCoy will formally introduce his deaf-defying project with an EP dropping Friday on Dune Altar.
Night City’s debut, Kuang XI, reeks of Godflesh, which McCoy often says he considers one of the biggest — if not the biggest — influences on his music. Find out for yourself right now with the Big Takeover’s exclusive premiere of Kuang XI, presented in full as a 16-minute video:
