Some bands are defined by an unforgettable song, album or concert. Others gain repute for bending, subverting or combining different styles of music. But it’s rare that a band makes a name for itself with an unbelievable story of triumph over seemingly impossible odds.

Meet Surrealized, a Seattle trio whose musical talents put most so-called “multi-instrumentalists” to shame. The band consists of Kimo Muraki, who handles vocals, bass guitar, synthesizers, electric guitar, cornet, trombone and mellophone; Markus Von Prause, the band’s go-to guy for drum programming, FM bass synthesis, keys, sound design; and Robert Sydow, who contributes additional drum programming, keys, production, mixing and sound design.

For a band with that many talents, you’d be correct to assume Surrealized isn’t boxed in by one musical style. Nu-disco, synthwave and future bass are just a few of the subgenres in which they marinate their songs. (Watch out, Har Mar Superstar — you may have met your match.)

And yet, despite all those eyebrow-raising descriptors, it might Surrealized’s story that is the most compelling aspect of the band. Their new album, Density, will drop Friday — a day the band members sometimes thought would never come.

“The release … is especially meaningful for us as we had been working to complete the album in the lead-up to our bandmate Robert’s successful kidney transplant,” the band told the Big Takeover. “Covid, unemployment … that happened … but Robert has been needing this transplant for over seven years and he finally got it in October 2021! Now we have this record and we can look with hope to a future full of new possibilities. The songs on this album are a collection of stories about time, change, love, the power of music … and dancing our collective butts off. We get to do that now.”
