Brooklyn-based musical duo Charming Disaster’s upcoming album, Our Lady of Radium, represents a departure from the occult themes the goth-folk duo have become known for on their past releases.
On the new album, Charming Disaster’s Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris apply their playfully dark artistic sensibility to the life and discoveries of pioneering scientist Marie Curie, as well as the tragic story of the “Radium Girls” and other consequences of Curie’s work.
Ellia and Jeff explain: “Listeners familiar with our past releases may find it surprising that we’ve chosen a scientist and her work as the inspiration for our new album, but Marie Curie’s story involves some of Charming Disaster’s favorite obsessions: myth, magic, and mortality. “
Big Takeover is pleased to host the premiere of the album in its entirety today before its official release.
Delve into the dark delights that Charming Disaster has to offer on this captivating storytelling album as they follow a historical path of an important figure who helped to shape modern medicine.
At turns tantalizing and tormented, Bisker and Morris utilize folk song structures and instruments, and a core of winning, twinning harmonies, and sharp and timely lyrics, to bring the past to life – and entwine it with the present day.
Our Lady of Radium will be released March 4 on CD, 12-inch vinyl LP and via download, simultaneously with a limited-edition lyrics and art book that includes Charming Disaster’s research notes and original illustrations by artist Susan Saas.
