Creation Dream Machine artists – collage
In celebration of the Creation Records spirit, seminal UK band RIDE will be playing Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom on October 14. Following this, Creation Dream Machine will be holding the official RIDE After Party just a few doors down at The Monty Bar (1222 W. 7th Street & Garland Ave.)
Among Creation Records artists, RIDE perhaps has such a strong association with the label, not only for spearheading the shoegaze scene in the early ’90s, but also due to guitarist Andy Bell’s subsequent move to join another Creation band – Oasis. Their debut album Nowhere is one of the important albums of the shoegazing genre. Although they announced their reunion in November 2014, it wasn’t until February 2017 that the band released their first new single in 21 years. Following their 2017 album Weather Diaries, they released the LP This Is Not a Safe Place in August 2019 and just dropped two new remixes on October 4.
Performances include DJ sets by JUGGS, an LA-based feel-good electronic pop outfit recently signed to Creation23 Records’ and Renaissance woman and music selector DJ Rose Knows (Lethal Amounts). JUGGS is Brandon Rauch and Willem Wolfe, who happens to be Billy Idol’s son. Their funky, electronic, poppy music shares a punk ethos in their attitude and the way they make music
Party-goers are also in for a treat as Kav Blaggers (a.k.a. KAV) offers a separate set. As a solo artist, KAV performed at the London Olympics, SXSW, CMJ and many festivals and shows on both sides of the Atlantic, including with Kasabian. As a DJ, KAV has toured internationally on line-ups with the likes of New Order and James Brown. He was also a member of Happy Mondays, who are now under Creation Management. More recently, he founded Blitz Vega with Andy Rourke (The Smiths) and released two singles in 2019.
“I’m definitely looking forward to DJ’ing Creation Dream Machine L.A. again for the Ride After-Show and celebrating some amazing music. I was a grunge kid then a huge Oasis & Brit / Rock n Roll fan growing up. Ride were the band for me that linked both scenes. They were my first step from grunge to British Indie. I remember blasting ‘Birdman’ on repeat with one of my best mates growing up in Leicester ‘Mikey Shine’ (bassist Black Grape, ex-Happy Mondays). We’d just get lost in the groove and sounds of the song, playing it back to back on repeat. As young musicians it blew us away & influenced us heavily,” says Kav Blaggers.
“Creation Records supplied the soundtrack to our lives growing up. A few years later one of our first bands, A.K.A Weave, supported Mark & Loz’s band The Animalhouse. We were kids and it was a big moment for us. I got to see Ride from the side of stage at the Music Tastes Good Festival in Long Beach a couple of years back. It was a monster of a gig! The new Ride album is one of the best albums of 2019, I think it’s my most played full album so far. ‘Kill Switch’ and ‘Fifteen Minutes’ are my favorite tracks.”
Creation Dream Machine is an event series born from the long-term relationship between Texas Bob Juarez (Television Personalities, Rose McDowall) and Alan McGee, founder of the legendary Creation Records and its new incarnation Creation23 Records. They forged the daydream together with McGee ultimately endorsing such Creation events.
Since his time as a member of UK post-punk band Television Personalities – another Creation Records band – Juarez has collaborated with McGee on other Creation events, such as Creation Sessions in Liverpool and Edinburgh, the Creation Tabernacle Venue in Wales, McGee’s national UK charity events like Musicians against Homelessness, and the more recent Creation23 Showcases at the Social London.
Creation Dream Machine represents an extension of the bountiful activity initiated by Alan McGee. Famed for his groundbreaking Creation Records, who brought us the likes of Oasis, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Swervedriver, Teenage Fanclub and Slowdive, McGee recently launched a new label – Creation23 Records. The zeitgeist and DIY ethos still remains in McGee’s work, his undertakings very much significantly impacting on the music scene today.
With all the buzz leading up to Danny Boyle and Irvine Welsh’s forthcoming film, centered on McGee’s life and Creation Records, Los Angeles is the latest locale with interest in spreading Creation’s good news. This event is one of three Creation Dream Machine events to occur before the end of 2019 with more to come in 2020.
The Monty Bar is located at 1222 W. 7th Street & Garland Ave. The event will take place from 10pm- 2am Pacific time. There is no cover charge. Please note, this is a 21+ event.
