The Big Takeover is pleased to present a surprise track by the Bay Area’s Seablite. Premiering ahead of the band’s debut album Grass Stains and Novocaine, which comes out on Emotional Response June 7th, the San Francisco quartet unveil their fuzzed-tone take on the avant-pop of Stereolab’s “French Disko.”
Lauren Matsui (vocals/guitar), states, “We started playing this song out at shows about a year ago. It is fun to play live and Stereolab is a huge influence on us, so it seemed like an appropriate cover to record.” Originally released on 2007’s ultra-scarce Eaten Horizons Or The Electrocution Of Rock, the cut’s poignancy seems more prevalent to today’s current state of affairs.
Despondent yet hopeful lyrics permeate Seablite’s groovy, chiming guitar attack. “Though this world’s essentially an absurd place to be living in / It doesn’t call for total withdrawal”. Despite lyrics painting a bleak picture in the present, It said human existence is pointless, the track’s urgency is propelled onward by a driving backbeat and swirling surf guitars while shimmering vocals carry the need for continued optimism, “As acts of rebellious solidarity / Can bring sense in this world / La Resistance!”,
Matsui summarizes, “It feels extremely relevant considering the political climate we’re in right now.”
